Miguel Hernandez, September 29, 1888-November 6, 1940
Miguel was born on September 29, 1888 in
Guerrero, Chihuahua, Mexico. He was from Chihuahua
City, Mexico. There were records found at St.
Francis Catholic Church in Abilene, TX where an entry indicated that Miguel
confirmed a Jesus Castaneda, son of Francisco Castaneda in Coahuila, Mexico on
June 2, 1899).
Miguel's parents were Miguel Hernandez Sr. and Fermina D. (not known if the D.
was for Diaz or Dominguez). Miguel 's brothers and sisters were (not in
order) Dolores, Lauro, Jesus Jose, Carlos, Isabel, and Conzuelo, (Miguel Jr.)
All with last name Hernandez. Miguel, of Spainish decent, immigrated to the United States
between 1910-1914. During the entire time Miguel was in the U.S., he received
mail from his sister Dolores, who was a school teacher. Miguel came from a well
to do family. He would have been persecuted by Pancho Villa if he stayed in
Mexico. That was the main reason he came to the U.S. The story is that the
Hernandez family had a bakery in Chihuahua. At age 39, the Mexican Consul at El
Paso, Texas certified that Miguel was elected to act as
secretry of the Mexican Colony of Merkel, Texas by the Mexican Honorary
Commission, to serve from January 10, 1926 to January 10, 1927.
Miguel expressed that he never
had the desire to return to Mexico.
At
about age 26 or 27, he married Guillerma Lujan in 1914. Their first daughter,
Lucia, was born on October 30, 1915 in Bronte, Coke County, Texas. Lucia
died in Lawrence, Kansas, June 16, 1992. Miguel moved his family to the Merkel
area in 1919 or 1920. Miguel appeared in the 1920 U.S. Census living Taylor
County, TX in the same residence of Antonio and Luz Ybarra. He was listed as
son-in-law of Antonio and Luz and his daughter Lucia and son Justo were also
listed in the household. He was 30 years old. His wife, Guillerma, was not
listed.
He also appeared on the 1930 U.S. Census as a head of household living in Taylor
County, Texas. He was 42 years old at the time and was listed as a laborer.
Since arriving in the United States he worked in the fields.
On October 22, 1935 Miguel bought Lot 4 in the Sharp Addition in the city of
Merkel, where the Merkel barrio had developed in the 1920s. The lot was
bought from A.B. Rosas and his wife Juana Luna Rosas for the amount of $40.00
(Deed File No. 4592, Taylor County, TX).
Miguel also had five sons, Pilar, (Born in Texas, October15,
1917, died in Merkel, Texas November 13, 1918), Justo, (May 28, 1919, born in Taylor County,
TX, died in Abilene, TX, March 11, 1994); Fermin, (born in Abilene,
TX, May 28, 1921, died May 2, 1995 in Abilene, TX); Miguel, (born in
Elmdale, TX, April 13, 1923, died in Sweetwater, TX, June 1, 1978) and
Cecilio (born in Merkel, TX, November 22, 1925, died in Ft. Worth, TX,
October 15, 1988).

At age 52, Miguel was killed in a car and train accident in Merkel on
November 6, 1940. At the time of his death he worked in the fields for Homer
Patterson. He is buried in Merkel, Texas. Grave is not marked. There are
no records of the plot's location.
Abilene Reporter News, November 7,
1940 Mexican Picker Killed by Train Merkel, Nov. 6-On his way to a nearby cotton field, Mike Hernandez, 52, was killed instantly early today when his car was struck by a Texas and Pacific freight train four blocks west of the depot. Hernandez was traveling north, the train was eastbound. The Mexican, was dead when he was picked up, three blocks from the scene of the crash, while the car still was on the engine when the train was brought to a stop a block farther on. Hernandez had lived here 21 years. He is survived by a wife, a daughter and four sons, including Fermin Hernandez, an enrollee at the Short Creek, Ariz. CCC camp. |

Guillerma Lujan Hernandez, February 11, 1896-November 12, 1960
Guillerma
was born in Ft. Stockston, Texas on February 11, 1896 to Felipe Lujan and Luz
Olivas. In the 1910 U.S. Census she appeared with her family as a 14 year old
girl living in Brewster County, Texas. Guillerma was listed with seven other
brothers and sisters. Her father was not listed that year, her mother was listed
as the head of household. Among the other children listed in 1910 were Severiana
and Antonio Olivas and Clemente, Maria, Sabas, Seledonio, Pabla and Demetria
Lujan.
Guillerma married Miguel Hernandez in 1914 at the age of 18 or 19. Her first daughter, Lucia, was born October 30, 1915 in Bronte, Coke County Texas. She moved to Taylor County, in the Merkel area in 1919 or 1920. Her husband worked in the fields and she was a homemaker.
At age 34, Guillerma appeared in the 1930 U.S. Census living in Taylor County, Texas. She was listed as the wife of Miguel and her children were listed as Lucia, age 14; Justo, age 11; Fermin, age 9; and Cecilio, age 5. Another son Miguel, who was born in 1923, was not listed.
Guillerma’s husband Miguel was killed in a car and train accident on November 6, 1940. She never remarried. Guillerma lived out her humble life in the barrio of Merkel, until her death on November 12, 1960.
She was the mother of three World War II veterans.

News, November 14, 1960 Mrs. Hernandez Dies in Merkel Merkel (RNS)- Mrs. Guillerma Hernandez died Saturday night at 9 p.m. at Sadler Clinic Hospital. She was 64 years old. Funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at graveside at Rose Hill Cemetery in Merkel. Mrs. Hernandez was born Feb. 11, 1896 in Fort Stockton, Tex., and was married to Miguel Hernandez in 1914. They moved to the Merkel community in 1920. He died serveral years ago. She is survived by four sons, Justo and Cecilo of Merkel and Fermin and Miguel of Abilene, one daughter Lucia Biera of Merkel, one brother, Seledonio Lujan of Lemesa and 35 grandchildren. |

Luz Olivas (1869-?
) Born in Mexico.Luz Olivas Qintela was born around 1869 or 1870 in Ojinaga, Chihuahua, Mexico and immigrated to the United States around 1881.
Luz Olivas first appears in the 1910 U.S. Census living in Brewster County, Texas (Alpine, Texas). She was listed as the head of the family and was 40 years old at the time. Listed as household members are:

Severiana, daughter, age 8
Antonio, son, age 1, 8/12 (born previous year)
Lujan, Clemente, daughter, age 20
Maria, daughter, age 19
Sabas, son, age 17
Seledonio, son, age 15 (March 4, 1894-August 15, 1967, died in Merkel Texas)
Guillerma, age 14 (February 11, 1896-Nov. 12, 1960, died in Merkel, Texas)

Demetria, daughter, age 10
Felipe Lujan, born in Ft. Stockton, was the father
of the Lujan children.
In the 1920 U.S. Census, Luz appeared as the wife of Antonio Ybarra living in
Taylor County, TX. Also living in her household were her two sons, Antonio age 9
and Frank age 8. Miguel Hernandez, her son-in-law and two grandchildren, Lucia
age 5 and Justo age 7 months were also listed.
Luz Quintela and Seledonio Lujan names appear on
a Certificate of Baptism record at St. Francis Catholic Church in Abilene, TX on
May 28, 1921. They baptized Fermin Hernandez, son of Miguel Hernandez and
Guillerma Lujan.
Luz Quintela Ybarra next appears in the 1930 U.S.
Census living in Taylor County, Texas (Merkel, Texas). She was list as the head
of the family and was 60 years old at the time. Listed as household members are:
Ybarra, Luz Quintela, head of household, age 60
Antonio, son, age 20
Francisco, son, age 18
There are no other records of when Luz died or where she is buried. She is
believed to have returned toTexas Ben Bend area in her later years and is buried in
Lajitas, Texas

Blas
Ybarra was born February 3, 1855 in Aguascalientes, Mexico and died February 24,
1931 in Merkel Texas.
Marcelina Santos Ybarra was born June 2, 1865 in Aguascalientes, Mexico and died
September 23, 1948 in Merkel, Texas. She was 83 years old.
Blas and Marcelina immigrated at the U.S. at the
port of El Paso on December 9, 1910. Listed
Terreon, Mexico as their residence. They
were sponsored by Blas brother Timotes (spelling?) Ybarra who lived at 1021 Utah
in El Paso, Texas. In the 1930 U.S. Census they were living in Taylor
County, Texas. Blas was 75 years old and Marcelina was 65. Both were retired.
They had five children: Rafaela (born October 21, 1899 in Terreon, Mexico, died
May 9, 1937 in Brownfield, Terry County, Texas. Immigrated to U.S. December 9,
1910 at El Paso, Texas port). Rafaela Ybarra married Francisco Perez. One of
their sons, Ramon Y. Perez, was killed in actoin in 1944, during WWII. Other
children were Estanaslado, Gregoria, Mateo (born September 21,
1886 in Mexico, died October 25, 1956 in Merkel, Texas), and Fernanda.

In the year 2001 the Ybarra family of Blas and Marcelina had a reunion in
Merkel, Texas.

to that time.
